A Beginner’s Guide to Collaborative Sustainability and Resource Stewardship in the ICU

April 22, 2026

New ANZICS–ICS Toolkit Launched: Advancing Sustainable Intensive Care

ANZICS, in collaboration with the Intensive Care Society United Kingdom (ICS-UK), has released A Beginner’s Guide to Collaborative Sustainability and Resource Stewardship in the ICU – a practical, evidence-informed toolkit to support intensive care teams in reducing environmental impact while maintaining high‑quality patient care.

Endorsed by the ANZICS Board of Directors (March 2026), and this guide builds on earlier Green Team initiatives and shifts focus to the areas with the greatest potential for impact: energy use, travel, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and waste. It provides real‑world case studies, actionable strategies, and multidisciplinary perspectives to help ICUs move from intention to implementation.

Designed for clinicians, managers, educators, and sustainability leads, the toolkit champions collaboration, value‑based care, and a sustainability mindset embedded into everyday practice. With practical tools, quality‑improvement frameworks, and governance considerations, it supports ICUs to lead meaningful change toward a more resilient, low‑carbon healthcare system.

Explore the guide and discover how every ICU can take practical steps toward sustainable care – starting now.
