About the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group

The ANZICS Clinical Trials Group (CTG) was formed in 1994 by a group of Intensivists keen to establish a network of investigators capable of designing and conducting multi-centre, investigator-initiated research in Australasian Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The ANZICS CTG is a highly collegial, multi-disciplinary community of Intensive Care Clinicians & Researchers​ who have to date attracted over $130m (AUD) in total research funding. The ANZICS CTG currently has 41 active studies.

The ANZICS Clinical Trials Group (CTG) is:

  • a standing committee of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS), which is committed to upholding the values of the organisation.
  • a collective of Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and dedicated professionals, who collaborate to conduct world-class intensive care research in Australia and New Zealand.
  • committed to establishing networks of investigators, supporting the ICU research workforce, and strengthening partnerships with external research bodies both locally and internationally.

The ANZICS CTG is administered by a standing committee of the ANZICS Board. In addition to a Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, this committee consists of a representative from each ANZICS Region (nominated by the ANZICS Regional Committees), an ANZICS Trainee Representative, and a representative from the Paediatric Study Group, the Intensive Care Research Coordinators Interest Group (IRCIG), and the ANZICS CORE Management Committee. Other co-opted members include the Immediate Past Chair, the ANZICS CTG Executive Officer and research strategy leaders as required.

The ANZICS CTG Committee meet three times a year and Committee reports are presented to the ANZICS CTG community at ANZICS CTG scientific meetings. Communication among the ANZICS CTG community is facilitated by a closed mailing list. This provides a peer review forum for developing studies, facilitates communication between Investigators and ICUs and fosters a network of support and interaction for the large number of individuals contributing to intensive care research in Australia and New Zealand.

The administration of the ANZICS CTG is supported by subscriptions received from member ICUs across Australia and New Zealand. An Executive Officer, supported by an Administrative Assistant, based in the ANZICS Office in Prahran oversees and coordinates the activities of the group. All other contributors including members of the Committee, Principle Investigators and Research Coordinators participate on a voluntary basis. Without the dedication, commitment and vision of these wonderful individuals, the ANZICS CTG would not exist.

One of the major strengths of the ANZICS CTG is its track record in establishing collaborative partnerships with investigators, institutions and other research networks within and outside the ANZ intensive care community. It has been fundamental to the successful completion of a number of large-scale ANZICS CTG studies.
