Emerging Researchers EMERGE
Are you relatively new to the world of ICU research? Do you know anyone who is? Please let them know about the EMERGE GROUP.
What is the EMERGE Group?
EMERGE Committee was formerly known as NoVIG. However, was recently rebranding to EMERGE to represent all emerging researchers (novices to mid-career researchers) in our community.
Established in 2019, the EMERGE group is an ANZICS Clinical Trials Group endorsed working group that aims to:
- Provide a peer support network for ICU novice investigators from all clinical backgrounds.
- Provide a forum for discussion of issues affecting ICU novice investigators.
- Advocate on issues affecting ICU novice investigators.
- Facilitate collaborative research.
Who are your EMERGE Committee?
Nominations were held electronically on 9 July 2024 . The following members were elected for a two-year tenure.
- Chair: A/Prof Kimberley Haines (ICU Physiotherapist and Research Lead, Western Health, NHMRC Fellow, The University of Melbourne, Victoria)
- Immediate Past Chair Emma Ridley
- Vice-Chair: Dr Neil Glassford (Senior Registrar, Intensive Care Unit, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Victoria)
- Secretary: Alistair Brown (Intensive Care Specialist, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne)
- Medical Representative: Frederick Hopkinson (Senior Registrar, Intensive Care Unit, Launceston General)
- Nursing Representative: Alex Poole (CCRN, PhD candidate, Method Chair National Evidence Taskforce)
- Allied Health Representative: Dr Lee-Anne Chapple (Dietitian & NHMRC Research Fellow, Royal Adelaide Hospital, SA)
Who can be a member?
Membership is open to all health professionals:
- Currently working within, or associated with, intensive care units of private or public hospitals within Australia and New Zealand. This includes those with university appointments or students actively engaged, or seeking to be engaged, in ICU-related research activities;
- That do not hold an academic title higher than senior lecturer/senior research fellow; and
- Who either have not completed a PhD, or completed a PhD less than 5 years earlier.
There is provision for individuals who do not meet these criteria to be admitted as members of EMERGE at the discretion of the EMERGE Executive Committee, either by invitation or on application. If you don’t meet the above criteria but still want to be involved, we very much encourage you to detail your reasons on the application form.

What do we do?
The EMERGE currently provides professional development and networking opportunities for the EMERGE community alongside the ANZICS CTG Annual Meeting and Winter forums and ANZICS Annual Scientific Meeting on a range of topics and formats.
