Severe acute respiratory distress syndrome: generating evidence in Australia and New Zealand

We hypothesise that this data will give an accurate description of the characteristics and management of adult patients admitted to the ICU in Australia

Study Description

Aims: To assess the management of moderate-severe ARDS in intensive care units in Australia and New Zealand.

Objectives: The objectives of this observational study are to:

  1. Describe management practises and variation in use of ventilator strategies and adjunctive therapies in patients with moderate-severe ARDS
  2. Determine factors in early moderate-severe ARDS associated with survival or need for adjuvant therapy
  3. Evaluate characteristics, management and survival in moderate-severe ARDS patients admitted to ICU compared with patients transferred to referral centres from other sites.
  4. Determine the variability in practise in the use of ventilation strategies and their association with subsequent mortality among patients with moderate-severe ARDS on ECMO.
