History of Intensive Care

Ronald Valentine Trubuhovich ONZM

 

Ronald Valentine Trubuhovich ONZM is a retired medical doctor and a pioneering figure in the development of critical care medicine in New Zealand.

He served as Deputy Medical Officer‑in‑Charge from 1968 to 1983 and subsequently led the intensive/critical care services at Auckland Hospital as Chairman of the Department of Critical Care Medicine. He held this role until his compulsory formal retirement in 1994, after which he continued to work at the hospital for a further four years.

Ron was President of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) from 1981 to 1982, inaugural Vice‑Dean of the Faculty of Intensive Care at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists from 1993 to 1996, and President of the Auckland Medical History Society from 2008 to 2009. In recognition of his services to medicine, he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the 1997 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

 

Monograph Publication

 

ANZICS is pleased to publish Ron’s monograph, Resuscitation and the Origins of Intensive/Critical Care Medicine. This comprehensive work documents the history of intensive care and captures key milestones in scientific and technological advancement. The monograph is based on Ron’s thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Medicine in Medical History at the University of Auckland on 31 January 2019 and is published with the University’s express permission.
